Just a short introHello.....and welcome to my site.
I hope that you may learn and maybe pick up some tips on knitting. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. The English word for "knitting" first appeared in the 14th century. Thought to have originated in the Middle East, it seems to have been done earlier than crochet, but later than weaving. Apparently at first, only men knitted. The first knitting union was founded in Paris in 1527, and no women were allowed in it. The knitting machine was invented in 1589 by William Lee..an English clergyman. As wool was not widely available, cotton and silk were the popular yarns to knit with during the first 400 to 500 years of knitting. Earliest needles were made of bone or ivory or tortoise shell but we now have plastic, metal, wood and bamboo needles. |
Knitting is good for youDid you know that knitting is not just a hobby and pastime?
It is in fact very healthy! Using both hands, you give your fingers, hands and forearms a good work out with the repetitive and rhythmic movements...improving fine motor skills and helping to prevent arthritis and tendinitis Blood pressure and heart rate decreases and stress levels fall. Your mind is kept active and engaged and scientists say that knitting can delay Dementia and Alzheimers. It helps anxiety and depression because you are relaxed and in a sort of meditative state. Knitting can teach patience and perserverence too, as making a mistake is no big catastrope..just a small detour along the way! |
